The Scrumpling is a restored vintage caravan set in two acres of private woodland and meadow adjacent to our family home. Named after an old word for a small, wonky apple (there are plenty of those in Somerset!), it's a wonderfully calm space for couples.
Entrance is via a separate, exclusive driveway just beyond our house. Curving woodchip paths lead from this private parking area to The Scrumpling; sturdy footwear and a torch are advised. The caravan has a king-size bed, open shelving and a green velvet sofabed that's perfect for snuggling up on indoors when the weather isn't playing ball. Cosy and comfortable, the caravan has large, light windows and a trove of books, games and art materials to enjoy. There's even a telescope for star-gazing, so you can make the most of the magical night skies in this part of the world.
A few metres from the caravan is the site's sunlit kitchen shed. Equipped with everything you need to make camping-style meals, there's a two-ring gas hob, a coolbox (we can supply fresh ice packs daily), a large drinking water container and all the usual equipment you would expect to find in a basic kitchen, from crockery, cutlery and glasses to pans, kitchen knives and a cafetière.
The Scrumpling's private washroom is set along its own little path, around 30m from the caravan, and backs onto our house. The washroom is connected to a mains water supply, so there's plenty of hot water for showers and washing up, and a proper flushing toilet. We provide lovely eco-friendly toiletries, towels and everything else you might need. It doesn't have electricity, though, so that torch will be handy!
For guests who need to work while they are away we can also give you access to a peaceful private cabin in the garden. This has power sockets and WiFi and can be arranged with a desk and chair (please let us know in advance if you would like to use this so that we can set it up for you). This is also a brilliant space for yoga and meditation, and can be set up as an extra bedroom by prior arrangement.
Guests have the whole of the two-acre site to themselves and are welcome to make the most of the leafy surroundings. There are hammocks in a little glade in the wood, an outdoor table and chairs for al fresco breakfasts and dinners, a campfire for toasting marshmallows and deckchairs overlooking the pond for lazy afternoons spent dragonfly-spotting.
The Scrumpling is off-grid. We can help charge devices if you’re stuck but there is generally no WiFi, heating, electric lighting or electricity across the site. It's a very natural, calming setting but some noise from the adjacent C-road is inevitable, particularly during the daytime. Our own garden is divided from the woodland and meadow by a low hazel fence. Beyond this you may see and hear us - and our two children - pottering in the garden but we aim to give guests absolute peace and privacy.
